Two operations
They are not the same thing
The names sound alike, and the result can be entirely different — especially when the original has to stay in one piece.
Cutting
One file becomes several. Useful when a scan holds several separate documents, or when a report is handed out by department.
Extracting
A new file is created with the chosen pages and the original is unchanged. This is the option for sending a fragment, not for rebuilding the document.
Deleting
A third possibility: keep the document but remove pages from it — a blank sheet from the scanner, or a note that was never meant for the recipient.
After splitting you usually need
- Page numbers on the new, shorter file
- A watermark if the fragment circulates before approval
- To merge the fragment with a covering letter
